Our value statement is: “We provide unsurpassed product and system expertise to assure minimum construction risk”. As engineers we love to calculate things. We love to automate things. Part of the driver for this, it was told to me years ago, is that we love machines because they are dependable. The same can be said today about technology and automation. In fact, I was told once by a senior executive of a Fortune 100 company, we are not in any service businesses, because they depend on people, and people are unreliable. The problem really arises today, when the ROBOT (my catch phrase for every automated system from the automated phone answering system to a shopping cart on the internet to SAP at manufacturing system) breaks down, or more often cannot understand or refuses to understand a customer’s position; in that case the customer is forced to interact with people. We see the ROBOT becoming more and more entrenched in commerce worldwide. Even though we are only a micro data point, we are positioning ourselves in small ways to take advantage of that business climate. Our business is interacting with people. We embrace customer interactions. It doesn’t mean we eschew technologies, we use them readily, but to gain more interaction with more people. Our strength in our markets is our relationships with our customers and our strategic business partners, built over many years.
Presently we are active in several markets with niche products. Every product we sell, we feel has to some technical edge to it so that we can leverage our people skills with our technical skills and generate customer loyalty. Our Northern California and Southern California businesses are run somewhat differently. In Southern California we are in one market – Fire Protection, selling to fire sprinkler contractors and gaining specifications from plumbing/mechanical and fire protection consulting engineers. In Northern California we are in several markets, Fire Protection, Plumbing Products, Mechanical (HVAC) Products, and electrical products as well as Field Services. In Southern California, our field services are done by a strategic business partner that we work very closely with – National Service & Controls out of Yucaipa. We purposefully keep our line card small. Our aim is depth not breadth.
We are positioning ourselves to capitalize on market conditions in the commercial construction arena, recognizing that people to people relationships will drive our success.
